March 2023 Volunteer of the Month
Lia Chan, CHRL
Manager, Quality
First Advantage Canada
My role at PBSA:
I am the Chair-Elect of the Canada Leadership Council, the Chair of the Canada Education/Industry Practices Committee, and immediate past chair and current member of the Diversity and Advisory Group. The opportunities to build a network, learn from subject matter experts, and develop new skills and confidence are immense. The people I work with at PBSA are phenomenal in their willingness to share their time and expertise.
Why I wanted to volunteer with PBSA:
I volunteer with PBSA to learn. It is also exciting to be able to contribute to the evolution of the association in this phase.
What I do when not at work:
I like to plonk on the piano in my home office. Since January, I have been preparing for my first 10km run to support Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. I also enjoy Taekwondo lessons with my husband Daniel, and my three children Abigail (10), Rowan (10) and Noah (7).
What I'm reading:
The Haunting by Shirley Jackson
Favorite website, podcast, blogs, etc.:
I subscribe to the New York Times and spend the rest of my online time reading restaurant menus.
On my desk right now (books, personal items, etc.):
On my desk right now is a cold black tea and a bowl leftover from breakfast. A frosted fern, a snake plant, and a ficus bonsai tree live on my desk alongside Lego and Play-Doh creatures made by my children to keep me company: a duck (?), a fortune cat, a dragon, a T-rex, and a rainbow monster.
